Experimental Limit on the Cosmic Diffuse Ultra-high Energy Neutrino Flux
We report results from 120 hours of livetime with the Goldstone Lunar
Ultra-high energy neutrino Experiment (GLUE). The experiment searches for <10
ns microwave pulses from the lunar regolith, appearing in coincidence at two
large radio telescopes separated by 22 km and linked by optical fiber. Such
pulses would arise from subsurface electromagnetic cascades induced by
interactions of >= 100 EeV neutrinos in the lunar regolith. No candidates are
yet seen, and the implied limits constrain several current models for
ultra-high energy neutrino fluxes.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, revtex4 style. New intro section, Fig. 2, Fig 4;

Observation of the Askaryan Effect: Coherent Microwave Cherenkov Emission from Charge Asymmetry in High Energy Particle Cascades
We present the first direct experimental evidence for the charge excess in
high energy particle showers predicted nearly 40 years ago by Askaryan. We
directed bremsstrahlung photons from picosecond pulses of 28.5 GeV electrons at
the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam facility into a 3.5 ton silica sand target,
producing electromagnetic showers several meters long. A series of antennas
spanning 0.3 to 6 GHz were used to detect strong, sub-nanosecond radio
frequency pulses produced whenever a shower was present. The measured electric
field strengths are consistent with a completely coherent radiation process.
The pulses show 100% linear polarization, consistent with the expectations of
Cherenkov radiation. The field strength versus depth closely follows the
expected particle number density profile of the cascade, consistent with
emission from excess charge distributed along the shower. These measurements
therefore provide strong support for experiments designed to detect high energy
cosmic rays and neutrinos via coherent radio emission from their cascades.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
IceCube-Plus: An Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Telescope
While the first kilometer-scale neutrino telescope, IceCube, is under
construction, alternative plans exist to build even larger detectors that will,
however, b e limited by a much higher neutrino energy threshold of 10 PeV or
higher rather than 10 to 100 GeV. These future projects detect radio and
acoustic pulses as w ell as air showers initiated by ultra-high energy
neutrinos. As an alternative, we here propose an expansion of IceCube, using
the same strings, placed on a gri d with a spacing of order 500 m. Unlike other
proposals, the expanded detector uses methods that are understood and
calibrated on atmospheric neutrinos. Atmosp heric neutrinos represent the only
background at the energies under consideratio n and is totally negligible.
Also, the cost of such a detector is understood. We conclude that supplementing
the 81 IceCube strings with a modest number of addi tional strings spaced at
large distances can almost double the effective volume of the detector.
Doubling the number of strings on a 800 m grid can deliver a d etector that
this a factor of 5 larger for horizontal muons at modest cost.Comment: Version to be published in JCA
Tracing very high energy neutrinos from cosmological distances in ice
Astrophysical sources of ultrahigh energy neutrinos yield tau neutrino fluxes
due to neutrino oscillations. We study in detail the contribution of tau
neutrinos with energies above PeV relative to the contribution of the other
flavors. We consider several different initial neutrino fluxes and include tau
neutrino regeneration in transit through the Earth and energy loss of charged
leptons. We discuss signals of tau neutrinos in detectors such as IceCube, RICE
and ANITA.Comment: 27 pages, 19 figure
Simulation for the oblique impact of a lattice system
The oblique collision between an elastic disk and an elastic wall is
numerically studied.
We investigate the dependency of the tangential coefficient of restitution on
the incident angle of impact.
From the results of simulation, our model reproduces experimental results and
can be explained by a phenomenological theory of the oblique impact.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Japa
Radio Detection of High Energy Particles: Coherence Versus Multiple Scales
Radio Cherenkov emission underlines detection of high energy particles via a
signal growing like the particle-energy-squared. Cosmic ray-induced
electromagnetic showers are a primary application. While many studies have
treated the phenomenon approximately, none have attempted to incorporate all
the physical scales involved in problems with time- or spatially- evolving
charges. We find it is possible to decompose the calculated fields into the
product of a form factor, characterizing a moving charge distribution,
multiplying a general integral which depends on the charge evolution. In
circumstances of interest for cosmic ray physics, the resulting expressions can
be evaluated explicitely in terms of a few parameters obtainable from shower
codes. The classic issues of Frauhofer and Fresnel zones play a crucial role in
the coherence.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figure
Dynamic model of elastoplastic normal collision of spherical particles under nonlocal plasticity
The problem of normal collision of a spherical particle with a half-space is considered with allowance for nonlocal plastic deformation in the case where the strength limit depends on the contact radius, as well as for the strengthening effect in the deformed material. The dimensionless coefficient of normal velocity restitution has been calculated numerically as a function of the initial velocity of the spherical particle. The obtained data coincide well with experimental results available in the literature
Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Fluxes: New Constraints and Implications
We apply new upper limits on neutrino fluxes and the diffuse extragalactic
component of the GeV gamma-ray flux to various scenarios for ultra high energy
cosmic rays and neutrinos. As a result we find that extra-galactic top-down
sources can not contribute significantly to the observed flux of highest energy
cosmic rays. The Z-burst mechanism where ultra-high energy neutrinos produce
cosmic rays via interactions with relic neutrinos is practically ruled out if
cosmological limits on neutrino mass and clustering apply.Comment: 10 revtex pages, 9 postscript figure
The Particle Physics Reach of High-Energy Neutrino Astronomy
We discuss the prospects for high-energy neutrino astronomy to study particle
physics in the energy regime comparable to and beyond that obtainable at the
current and planned colliders. We describe the various signatures of
high-energy cosmic neutrinos expected in both neutrino telescopes and air
shower experiments and discuss these measurements within the context of
theoretical models with a quantum gravity or string scale near a TeV,
supersymmetry and scenarios with interactions induced by electroweak
instantons. We attempt to access the particle physics reach of these
experiments.Comment: Mini-review article for New Journal of Physics, "Focus on Neutrinos"
